Notes:
When the American Petroleum Institute (API) CK-4 standard was released in 2016, Ford replaced its original recommendation of WSS-M2C171-D with WSS-M2C171-F1. Ford Motor Company maintains its recommendation for motor oils meeting the specific Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 specification instead of generic CK-4 oils for its 3.2L, 6.7L, and older diesel engines (4.5L, 6.0L, 6.4L, and 7.3L). This is due to tests showing some CK-4 formulations offered less wear protection than the CJ-4 oils licensed before 2016. As a result, Ford added specific requirements to its WSS-M2C171-F1 standard for better wear protection. As a result, Ford added specific requirements to its WSS-M2C171-F1 standard for better wear protection. Following the practice of many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Ford recommends using oils that meet its own standard, the Ford Material Engineering Specification WSS-M2C171-F1.

Notes:
In 2016, with the introduction of the American Petroleum Institute (API) CK-4 standard, Ford superseded its original recommendation of WSS-M2C171-C with the new WSS-M2C171-F1 specification. Ford's official stance is to continue recommending motor oils meeting Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 specification over standard CK-4 oils for its 3.2L, 6.7L, and older diesel engines (4.5L, 6.0L, 6.4L, and 7.3L). This is because testing on some CK-4 oils revealed inadequate wear protection compared to previous CJ-4 formulas. To address this, Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 standard includes extra requirements for added wear protection. Similar to other diesel engine manufacturers, Ford advises using oils that meet its specific internal Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standard, which is the Ford Material Engineering Specification WSS-M2C171-F1.
