In 2016, when the American Petroleum Institute (API) CK-4 standard was introduced, Ford updated its original recommendation from ESE-M2C153-E to WSS-M2C171-F1. Ford Motor Company's official position is to continue recommending motor oils that meet the specific Ford specification WSS-M2C171-F1, rather than standard CK-4 oils, for its 3.2L, 6.7L, and older diesel engines (4.5L, 6.0L, 6.4L, and 7.3L). Testing has shown that some CK-4 formulas provide inadequate wear protection compared to the older CJ-4 oils. Therefore, Ford's WSS-M2C171-F1 specification includes additional requirements beyond CK-4 to ensure superior wear protection. Like many Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Ford recommends using oil that meets its own internal standard, the Ford Material Engineering Specification WSS-M2C171-F1.
